I met Paula first time couple of years ago when I participated in her free-diving training. She was my coach with her significant other. I admired both of their passion for the sport and their will to share the joys of free-diving with people.
Paula won Finnish free-diving nationals two times. Unfortunately, she had a serious accident one year ago with one of her legs and it took her away from her competition career. Her leg has since been operated on several times and recovery has been challenging. Even she has gone back to water since then she hasn’t been able to carry on her passion to compete as an athlete. It’s hard to step away from your passion and it takes time to recover from your injuries.
The inspiration to create this images series came from real life mermaids that have a love for the waters. And for the changes, we must accept sometimes in life. Even more, when we face obstacles in our careers we are passionate about.
During our photo session, my vision for the images changed completely. What I thought it will be, became a different story. I love to let my intuition show me the way it sees the best way to go. The creation process brought a happy surprise in the end.
Paula in red dress symbolizes her passion for the mermaid lifestyle. Her free-diving career went under the knife and was cut by a scythe in my series. Like her going into a major leg surgery. Death for something you loved so much. In the end, she is surrounded by green grass which symbolizes her love for the sport and water. Showing her feet that once were a mermaid tail.
